Meet at Lawyer’s Mall in front of the State House to show support for the Maryland Health Security Act (state single-payer). We want a good turnout. Speakers will include representatives from the Coalition for Health Security and legislators. After the rally, we will distribute lobbying materials and give a briefing on lobbying. Budrus is a stunning documentary film about Palestinian villagers, under the leadership of Ayed Morrar and his fifteen-year-old daughter, Iltezam, who adopted the strategy of non-violent resistance, united all political factions along with Israelis and stopped construction of Israel's Separation Barrier that would have destroyed the villagers' lands, cemetery and livelihood. (Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro). To commemorate the one year anniversary of the Israeli invasion of Gaza, peace activists from around the country will be on hand to commemorate the one year invasion of Gaza, in which over 1,300 Palestinians were killed during 22 days of bombings. Living conditions in Gaza remain desperate. The vigil is part of a worldwide effort in solidarity with the Palestinians of Gaza, including a Freedom March scheduled to take place in Gaza on Dec. 31st, involving peace activists from 42 countries. Coal is mined more cheaply than ever, and nationwide demand for electricity generated from burning this fuel is rising. However, what results from this process is chemical-filled air and water, as well as the destruction of an ancient mountain range. After the film, attendees will have the opportunity to hear about power companies’ plans to build new power lines through Maryland to import dirty electricity from coal from Appalachia and how they can help in the fight against these projects directions here.

The case of police spying in Maryland - Panel on The Maryland "Freedom of Association and Assembly Protection Act of 2009" (Senate Bill 256/House Bill 182) includes an ACLU Representative, Sue Udry director of the Defending Dissent Foundation, and 3 activists Nadine Bloch, Pat Elder, and Bette Hoover from the 53 local activists who were mistakenly entered into a database as being “suspected of involvement in terrorism”. The ACLU of Maryland exposed the Maryland State Police for spying on peaceful activists, infiltrating their meetings, compiling dossiers on them, and falsely labeling them in a criminal intelligence database as suspected terrorists. Legislation at both the state and federal level to ban such political spying and protect our first amendment rights is in the works. Discussion and refreshment to follow presentation. How does this fit with NSP's new bottom line of compassion, generosity and care of the earth as opposed to the old bottom line of money and materialism. We'll explore the work of Rev Billy Talent and his fictional "Church of Stop Shopping". They provide performance art done as comedy and satire but with a gravely serious message in this year of economic down turn, and distress in so many families who are in deep debt and losing homes partially due to greed and consumerism. What do we think of the connections these activists draw and how does this impact our holiday decisions? Sat, Sept 20, A Million Doors for Peace - Join with UFPJ, USAction/True Majority, Pax Christi USA, Win Without War, Catholics United and others in gathering more grass roots support for peace. On this day, volunteer door-knockers will be asking people to sign an anti-war petition directed to Congress. In addition they will be giving out literature inviting people to join local anti-war groups and offering other ideas for how people can get involved. We seek to have the advanced industrial countries of the world use their resources to eliminate once and for all global poverty, homelessness, and hunger; provide quality education and health care for all; and repair the global environment. As an initial commitment, we want the U.S. to donate at least 1-2% of its Gross Domestic Product each year for the next twenty years.
