NSP MD events April and May 2007

We in the Network of Spiritual Progressives (NSP) are interfaith (and secular) activists offering a vision of compassion and generosity for renewing hope and supporting spiritual value-based progressive policies in the U.S.

In April 2007 NSP is celebrating Generosity Day at various locations, asking that Congress help us be generous by using our tax money not for war but for eliminating poverty in the world & US. We talk about a new Global Marshall Plan and the UN Millenium Development Goals as well as programs in the US to help families and extend health care to all.

See "Time for new Marshall Plan to rebuild, heal world" By Mark Klempner, recent Baltimore Sun op/ed. on Generosity Day here.

We'll have a full agenda, as events we are co-sponsoring are coming soon, for which we'll do final plans. At the Saturday, April 28th United for Peace and Justice Annual Conference we'll have both a workshop and an information table. Then on Wed. evening, May 2nd we're co-sponsoring author Gary Gardner, whose book Inspiring Progress: Religions' Contribution to Sustainable Development is both challenging and inspiring. Both of these events will be at Paint Branch. We'll also begin to plan an NSP summer service, that once developed, we anticipate can be presented in a variety of settings. Important lobbying in Congress on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict has been joined by NSP members. We will hear about that too. We also plan to focus on elements of the NSP covenant and how they speak most meaningfully to each of us.

Wed., May 2, 7:30 pm Gary Gardner of The WorldWatch Institute speaks on
"Inspiring Progress: Religions' Contributions to Sustainable Development"
at a Network of Spiritual Progressives Meeting in Adelphi Md.
Join an insightful and critical discussion :
Gary invites attendees to think critically about what constitutes "progress" and examines the potential of the world's religious traditions to shape a new definition of progress for the coming century. He argues that one alternative vision of human progress--sustainable development--is rooted in values similar to those that inspire many religious traditions.
