NSP Maryland Winter 2009-2010

Wed, Nov 18 - 7:30 pm - NSP Maryland Meeting - We'll continue discussion on our co-sponsorship of Middle East Peace event 12/6, climate action initiatives and the economy, as well as discuss the "End of Coal in Maryland" initiative and upcoming possible activities for campaign finance reform. Last meeting we briefly discussed an NSP "Personal Environmental Commitment" that we will go over in more depth. (See discussion document here.) Plans are to have a major speaker in February which we will also discuss in more detail. We hope to see many of you at our meeting! Sun, Nov 22, 2009 4:30-6:30 PM "Power Companies’ Dirty Plans for Maryland - Help Stop New Coal Power in Our State" - Balt Green Forum at Maryland Presbyterian Church, 1105 Providence Road, Towson, MD 21286 This presentation will begin with a showing of “Coal Country,” a film that tells of the dramatic struggle around coal mining in Appalachia. Coal is mined more cheaply than ever, and nationwide demand for electricity generated from burning this fuel is rising. However, what results from this process is chemical-filled air and water, as well as the destruction of an ancient mountain range. After the film, attendees will have the opportunity to hear about power companies’ plans to build new power lines through Maryland to import dirty electricity from coal from Appalachia and how they can help in the fight against these projects directions here.
